Why Taking Off Your Jewellery Matters: Tips for Keeping Your Sparkle Safe (even if it is water and tarnish proof)

If you're like me, you probably wear jewellery multiple times a week. You love your fine sparkles, right? But, here's the thing. I am seeing so many adverts at the moment about waterproof and tarnish proof jewellery and how it needn’t be taken off. That’s all well and good but it’s something that doesn’t sit right with me. I’m all for jewellery staying pristine, don’t get me wrong, but did you know that wearing jewellery can affect your workout and even cause damage? Also sleeping with your jewellery on or wearing it in the shower is like letting your dog play with your favourite designer shoes. Entertaining, but risky! I've compiled a list of everyday scenarios where wearing jewellery can lead to problems.

If you're like me, you probably wear jewellery multiple times a week. But did you know that wearing jewellery can affect your workout and even cause damage? I've compiled a list of everyday scenarios where wearing jewellery can lead to problems.

Exercise

I try to train at least five times a week with a Friday night class of Reformer Pilates to finish the week. There is no way I could wear my jewellery to these classes. It just does not make sense. It can be distracting and a nuisance, getting caught on springs, the straps, knocking you in the teeth- the list is endless. Not only that, but during exercise, you're likely to sweat more than usual and your body temperature will rise. The combination of moisture and heat can cause jewellery to loosen or break, which could lead to irritation.

Jewellery may also be caught on equipment such as weights and treadmills, potentially causing injury. Or if it gets caught in your hair or clothing during exercise, it could be difficult for you to get free without help from someone else--and let's face it: nobody wants their earrings ripped out by accident!

Catching Z's Without the Beads

We all know how it feels to snooze off without even taking off our shoes, let alone the earrings. But here's the kicker:

Those beautiful chandeliers hanging from your ear might end up lodged in your ear canal. Ouch!

Rings are notorious for causing finger swelling during sleep. I've been there, woken up with my fingers feeling like chubby little sausages!

Necklaces getting tangled in your hair... not fun when you wake up!

You don't want a trip to A&E because your anchor pendant decided to act like a real one!

In all seriousness, your bedtime routine is a sacred time to unwind and recharge, and it's essential to create an environment that promotes relaxation. One crucial aspect often overlooked is removing your jewellery before sleep. While it may be tempting to keep your favourite pieces on overnight, it's best to let your gems rest along with you.

Sleeping with jewellery can lead to damage, discomfort, and even accidents. The most common reasons for not wearing jewellery to sleep are that it can be a choking hazard, get caught in sheets and blankets, scratch your skin, or get caught in your hair.

If you're concerned about scratching from sheets or blankets--or even just from tossing around--you may want to consider getting some specialised sleepwear made from cotton or silk instead of regular cotton pyjamas that might have wool blended into them. As for getting tangled up with hair accessories like headbands and barrettes: these can be removed before bedtime so they don't cause any problems while sleeping!

Your Jewellery Care Routine

Maintaining your sparkles isn't rocket science! These handy tips can help:

  • Gently clean them with a soft cloth. You don't want scratches on your precious little sparklers.

  • Invest in a good quality jewellery-box. It all needs a cosy home!

  • Think of switchable accessories for bed or shower. For instance, silicon rings can be a safe alternative.

Wrapping It Up with a Bow

There you have it, folks! Leave your prized bedazzles out of bed and shower. Show them the love they deserve and they'll shine bright for you, every single day!

So, let others in on this secret too! Trust me, your jewellery (and friends) will be forever grateful! Share away, and don't be shy to drop your 'caught sleeping with the necklace on' incidents in the comments!

Swimming

Swimming is one of the most popular forms of exercise, but it's also one of the most dangerous. This is especially true if you wear jewellery while swimming.

  • Swimming in a pool is not the same as swimming in the ocean: The biggest difference between these two types of water activities is that your body will be subjected to much less pressure when submerged in a pool than it would be at sea level. This means that there's less risk for injury or damage from sharp objects like coral reefs or fish hooks--but it also means that any loose jewellery on your person can easily get caught on other swimmers or pool equipment!

  • Your body moves more freely when moving through water than air: When swimming underwater, our bodies move more freely because they're not fighting against gravity--this means that any loose items attached to our bodies (like earrings) could come off easily during laps around the pool!

  • You should also be careful about wearing your jewellery when you're visiting the beach. Sand and sun can damage it, and salt water will do even more damage. If you're swimming in a pool, chlorine can also be harmful to your precious metals and stones.

Sleeping

Keep your jewels on the not invited list for the shower karaoke concert

Picture this: you're jamming out to your shower playlist while drenched in suds, when suddenly you remember - Oops, I've got my favourite necklace on! Don't worry, you're not alone! We've all been there, but it's time to up your shower game to protect your beloved sparkles.

Shower Wars: Jewellery vs. Soap Suds

You can't have your cake and eat it, too! Water, soap, and chemicals lurking in your shower products can lead to a not-so-happy ending for your pretty treasures:

  • Gold, meet chlorine: Over time, nasty chlorine can weaken your gold jewellery. Yikes!

  • Silver's soapy nemesis: Soap scum buildup on your silver? Not a good look.

  • Precious stones and the chemistry: Diamonds might be forever, but aggressive chemicals can damage their sparkle. Tragic!

  • Ever lose an earring down the drain? It'll drain your mood as well as your bank balance.

  • Hard water can be the worst enemy of your sterling silver bracelet.

  • Leave your pearls on the stand, they're not fans of your sing-along in the water!

Don't Slip Up: Store Your Sparkles in Style

Save your jewellery from a watery doom with these shower storage tips:

  • Designated dish: Grab a cute little dish to place your jewellery on while you lather up.

  • Box it up: Level up with a small, secure jewellery box to keep your trinkets safe and dry.

  • Location, location, location: Keep your shower storage away from steam and splashes. Your gems will thank you!

Don't Be Duped by Shower Jewellery Myths

Shower-time jewellery cleaning? No way, José! Here's why:

  • Scrubbing can damage: That loofah might feel great on your skin, but it could scratch your favourite ring.

  • Suds and stones don't mix: Soap can leave your precious stones looking dull. You could even lose one to the plughole. Save the shimmer for a proper clean!
