Sustainability
Finding a balance between environment, equity, and economy
This page explains how ÎLE KEKERE approaches sourcing, production, and packaging.
It sets out what we do, what we avoid, and where we are still improving.
We do not position sustainability as a claim or a marketing tool.
We treat it as an operational responsibility.
MATERIALS.
Gemstones
ÎLE KEKERE uses lab-grown gemstones.
Lab-grown stones have the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as mined gemstones, without the environmental and ethical impact of extraction. They allow for greater consistency in colour, cut, and durability, and reduce the need for mining practices associated with significant land disruption and labour risk.
We do not use mined gemstones.
Lab-grown stones do not solve every environmental issue, but they materially reduce harm compared to extraction-based alternatives.
ÎLE KEKERE is a small business. That means we keep runs tight, choose suppliers carefully, and make decisions that prioritise longevity over disposability.
Metals
Our jewellery is made using stainless steel, silver vermeil, and gold-plated brass.
These metals are selected for durability, wearability, and longevity.
Plated finishes are chosen with the expectation that jewellery is worn regularly and cared for appropriately. No plated jewellery is permanent, and ageing over time is normal.
We do not claim permanence where it does not exist.
PRODUCTION.
ÎLE KEKERE jewellery is produced in small batches.
Pieces are assembled and finished by hand, allowing for visual alignment, quality control, and reduced overproduction. Small-batch production limits excess stock and avoids trend-driven volume manufacturing.
We do not mass-produce.
We do not manufacture for seasonal disposal.
Scale is managed deliberately to maintain quality and reduce waste
We use minimal, functional packaging designed to protect jewellery while reducing unnecessary materials.
Where possible:
Packaging is FSC-certified
Materials are recyclable
Plastic use is avoided
Some protective elements may still require plastic to prevent damage in transit. Where this is the case, it is used sparingly and reviewed regularly.
Packaging is treated as a practical necessity, not a brand statement.
PACKAGING.
WHAT WE DON’T DO.
We believe clarity matters as much as intention.
ÎLE KEKERE does not:
Use mined gemstones
Claim carbon neutrality
Rely on offsets to justify production
Overstate environmental impact
Frame sustainability as perfection
We avoid broad claims we cannot evidence.
ONGOING REVIEW.
Sustainability at ÎLE KEKERE is an ongoing process, not a fixed position.
As the brand grows, we continue to review materials, suppliers, and packaging choices to improve durability and reduce waste where possible. Changes are made carefully and documented honestly.
We prioritise progress that can be implemented and maintained.
